5e: Icy Nagas, Zombies, and Worms

From: Sir Fulhoff of Clan Balderk, Knight of Hawk’s Nest
To: Helja and Adrik of Clan Balderk

Mother and Father:

After getting some rest, we made our way carefully and slowly into the ice encrusted structure. Joda, taking a quick look around, pointed out one tunnel, and told us that was the way to go. Never argue with someone who has been touched by a god. Creeping along the path, Journey spots a crack in the icewall, and beyond a chamber. Within, she sees a pair of skeletal nagas wrapped in the spectral flesh.

She shoots a fireball into the chamber! This clearly injures both creatures, blows open the passage, and brings down large chunks of ice all over. Joda rushes into the chamber, and in a acrobatic display kicks, punches, and headbutts one of them into the ground. It’s partner threatens us with death, and tries to lightning bolt Joda, but I lash out with my own magic, capturing the bolt before it can hurt her. As the arcane power glows like a nimbus around me I told her “I don’t think so”

Journey then, realizing that fire magic is dangerous to use in an icy environment, blasts the naga with a ray of frost, completely covering her in a layer of ice. Bran follows that up with a pair of black arrows that drain the color from its spectral skin. Looting the lair, we recover a trio of magical weapons and some assorted other goodies.

While this was going on, we managed to attract the attention of some ice zombies. THankfully the narrow passages kept them from swarming us, and once I reminded Bran that he had a wand of lightning, their numbers were instantly cut in half. Joda used his radiant sunbolts to cut into them, while Hilde chopped them down with ease. The icy floors kept Thorin and I mostly out of the fight.

Once the zombies were cut down, Journey raised one, while Bran spoke with the dead spirit within.
Q: Who are you?
A: Jim Thorpe, adventurer, now expired
Q: When did you die?
A: About a century ago, give or take a decade…
Q: What killed you?
A: That nasty rude snake lady
Q: Where did she kill you?
A: Back thataway, in the tunnels.
Q: Where are the Brightly Bannered Brandished?
A: I don’t know who that is….

And with that, the spirit left the body.

Further along the tunnels, we arrived at a massive chamber, hundreds of feet tall, the defining feature of which was a 150’ tall statue of a hobgoblin in robes, arms upraised. The ice had done its work, and there were cracks all over it. Thorin noticed the arcane and goblin script written on the base, but its meaning eluded me. Journey had Bob Zombie check it out, and Bob lost a finger in one of the cracks. Meanwhile Bran, checking out the rest of the chamber, found a frozen body with bite wounds.

Joda scurries up the crack riddled surface of the statue, arriving near the next before he’s attacked by ice worms! Grabbing the biggest one, he chucks it off the statue, and it plummets 100’ to a messy end. I cast fly on Thorin, and he shoots up to assist. Bran uses his black bow to lob arrows at the worms, and Journey takes potshots at them with her blasts.

Getting tired of being picked on, Joda summons her mystical fire, and blasts it into the largest hole in the statue, melting more ice, and at least injuring some more worms. Thorin then flies into the still steaming hole, grabs the first worm to attack him, flies out, and drops it. Journey and Bran continue plinking away at the worms, and Joda punches, grabs and tosses another…
