The Angels have the Phone Box!

I wanted to make this for a friend for the holidays... I was a little late getting to it. Last year I'd painted up a Phone Box for her. This year... I wanted to do this.

This was a fairly simple project. 4 of the Reaper Weeping Angels of Sorrow (the angry ones) on a 3” base with just enough space that the Police Box can be added or removed. The angels were base coated with Grey Liner, and then brought up with Mountain Stone and Linen White. The ground cover was coffee grounds, mostly painted with Walnut Brown mixed with a few other random colors (mostly other browns) and just kind of smashed on.

How else would you paint them?

Checking for spacing when gluing them to the base.

Adding coffee.

Painting the base...

And done!

And in it's new home!

Total Minis Painted in 2018: 31 (technically it was 4 miniatures...)

Stonehell: Blacksun Curse

Session 59 was played on 1/23

Eiric, wizard 6 (Kat)
- men at arms (Koltic)
- linkmen (Lomax)
- Neon (dog)
A-A-Ron, Thief 6 (Henchman)
Daryll, Cleric 6 (Henchman)
Orpheus, Human Fighter 5 (Henchman)
Karl, Dwarf 6 (Julia)
- Hobart (dog)
- men at arms (Scar the Useless, GoMat)
Lex the Cheeseman, Fighter 3
Brie, wizard 2 (Apprentice to Eiric)
Borumar, ½ Orc Thief 5 (Josh)

Carefully the party makes its way into the chamber of the Black Sun. The large empty room dominated by a glossy black sun covering most of the north wall, and ceiling. Black rays shoot along the walls, and between them, figures carved into the wall cower from it. Finding nothing, the party continues through the opposite door. Everyone feels a wave of general unpleasantness as they pass through the doorway, but GoMat seems to startle at every little thing, and Lex has every hair on his body fall out.

The hallway is constructed almost exactly to the opposite one, and Karl and A-A-Ron disable the traps. The next room contains a pair of sunken washing stations. Once they figured out how to operate the lever without standing in the showers, they discovered the southern shower sprays water, while the northern one sprays sand. Karl decided to check both. Sticking his hand in the water, he felt the same sensation as when he passed from the Chamber of the Black Sun, and his vision blurred until it was clearly doubled. He then strips off his clothing and armor, and walks into the sand spray. It stings, but he feels more energized by it.

The party returns to the Chamber of the Black Sun, and then takes the southern door, again feeling the wave of discomfort as they pass through the doorway out of the room. Lex feels particularly unlucky, while Koltic begins to itch all over. Darryl is wracked by stomach cramps that keep him mostly bent double.

The next chamber has 2 sets of stairs going down, one in either corner. The steps to the east are slightly less dusty, and show more wear overall. In the corner of the room is an old dry body, covered with green fur. Long limbed, and humanoid it clutches a large jeweled box. They opt to leave the box for now, as it would be an awkward thing to carry. Taking the less used stairs, A-A-Ron goes first, and finds a trapped step right at the top. Everyone steps over it, and they continue down.

After a long descent, the stairs end, and the passage turns into a hallway. A-A-Ron and Karl note that there are odd spots in the ceiling, but aren’t sure what they are until Karl and Orpheus trigger the trap. At either end of the hallway, and just past the T-intersection, massive blocks drop, trapping them between the 3 of them. A small gap around the side of the blocks allows them to talk with the rest of the party, but A-A-Ron can’t figure a way to reset the stones… And a voice calls out from the branching hallway. Dry, old, and difficult to understand. It identifies itself as Zunbar, who thinks the party is a hallucination. Karl and Orphius use Karl’s tools to begin hacking away at the stone block dividing them from the rest of the party. During a break, Karl notices the stonework on the wall hides a secret door that opens into a long dark stairwell… Rather than head off on their own, they continue their demolition.

Many hours of loud work, which annoys Zunbar pass before they can make their escape. Meanwhile Zunbar has its own way of getting past the blocks. It slowly, painfully, and with a fantastic amount of blood and gore, pushes itself into the gap, slowly squeezing its way out. The party was long gone before the troll flopped its way out of the gap and regenerated.

The trip back to town is uneventful. Darryl uses his divine magics to remove the curses from the party, but the rituals take days… And while the party is away, an old evil is allowed to reenter Stonehell.

Ettin Again...

From: Fulhoff of Clan Balderk
To: Helja and Adrik of Clan Balderk

Mother & Father,

Our elf companion Astrid, returned to the main passage to use his bow on any orcs that stuck their heads out in that direction, and to target the ettin if she came into sight. The rest of us charged in to the large cavern. I Knocked the cyclops’ cage open, while Journey went in fire bolts blazing, Thorin charging in behind her. That’s then, at the rear of the cave, an only sort of noticed doorway opened up, and more orcs appeared. I dropped a Cloud of Daggers in the doorway, causing the orcs to rush through whirling blades of death (or at least some pain). The Cyclops (that we hoped was Gavin’s friend Gurak) grabbed one of the ettin’s clubs, and smashed her with it. Journey kept up the flames, while Astrid’s bow strings could be heard plinking and orc grunts of pain called out from the hall. A few of the orcs managed to get into melee, and I tossed a spark at his eye as he tried to smash me. Thorin was less lucky, and an orc knocked him boots over helm. To be fair, he’d already taken a few to the head from the ettin. Journey’s rain of fire finally felled the ettin, and we put down the rest of the orcs. Thorin was fine after he shook it off and gulped down a healing potion.

We talked to Garuk the cyclops, looted the orcs, and returned to Gavin, who was waiting nervously at his cart. It was a happy reunion, and I’ll never be able to burn the image of Gavin running to Garuk and Garuk catching Gavin in an overhead horizontal lift. Overall score was an 8/10, but they took a hit from the elf judge who only gave it a 4/10.

Checking in with The Hand, we heard about another Artifact of Astoria, located at a barbarian barrow mound containing the Well of Victory.

We dutifully made our way there, and Bran disguised himself as a barbarian, and between his fast talking, and my proselytizing of the Great Digger (thankfully she doesn’t care about this sort of thing) we were granted access to the mound. It was surprisingly well built, for a barbarian construction, and in the middle of the mound was indeed a well. It was a dry well, and probably more of a vent shaft than an actual well. We dropped some ropes and climbed down.

The shiny black mosaicked stonework was a sight to behold. Depictions of giants and dragons fighting each other covered the space clearly designed for giant-folk. The gently sloping passage’s artistry distracted us from noticing a well laid spell trap. An ancient frostwyrm depicted on the ceiling glowed briefly, and we were all suddenly blasted with arctic cold, and the hall become covered in frost. Thorin and I both lost our footing and slid down toward some ice spikes that had grown in the instantly frozen hall. After extricating ourselves from the spikes, we saw beyond into a large round chamber, lit by 4 floating candles several bodies that looked fairly fresh… and matched the descriptions of the Hand operatives that had gone missing looking for this place. I went in, carefully, to investigate.

Sadly it became apparent what killed them, as a dark spirit entered the body of one of the operatives, and animated the others. They lurched to their feet and attacked. Being alone in the room, I backed away, followed by one of the zombies, while the rest of the party moved to engage. Not feeling up to a hug from a zombie, I turned myself invisible, and snuck behind the operative… and opened up with my trusty Witch Bolt. Watching him stagger under my onslaught was particularly rewarding. The rest of the party dispatched the zombies, and my magic took down the wight.

Thankfully we found the Astorian artifact, the Kong Spira… I’m sure that sounds more impressive in giant than it does in dwarven.

April In Review

Gaming:
My Stonehell game is on hiatus for a few weeks, which will give me a chance to get all caught up with my session reports… I’m still back in January… yikes!

Storm King’s Thunder game is rumbling along. We’ve apparently been taking every little side quest, and shiny little thing the DM has dangled in front of us, keeping the storyline from moving along very much. I’m cool with that for now. Painfully close to 5th level, and a the last session ended in the middle of combat, I don’t get to level up… and I’ve got everything picked to do it already.

Minis:
When your DM asks if you’ve got an ettin… you paint up an ettin.

I also finished up the last of the holiday gifts I’d planned (The Angels Have The Phone Box – Yet to be posted), as well as Ingrid and the Peacock Elf(also yet to be posted).

Currently working on all these guys:

Movies (and TV):
Guardians of the Galaxy, vol 2
Doctor Strange
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Thor Ragnarok
Black Panther
Infinity War

I wrapped up my Infinity War Countdown (listed above), shared my thoughts on it, and then caught Infinity War. Wrapping up Jessica Jones season 2 as well as getting started with the new Lost in Space reboot.

Now that I’m done with the Countdown, I’m going to focus a bit on Supernatural, as I’m still back in the middle of season 9, and have been for like a year now.

Goals for May:
Finish Blightfang, and the other minis on my work tray.

Infinity War: Initial Reaction!

NO SPOILERS!

Saturday morning (the earliest tickets I could get) I went to my local Alamo and watched Avengers: Infinity War... and wow... that was BRUTAL.

I mean, you kind of expected it to be, but... wow. It went directions I did not expect, and my top 2 predictions, the things I was sure were going to happen, didn't.

And the 2 hour 40 minute runtime didn't feel like it while you're watching it, but after... you felt it after. It never really gave you time during the movie to process. There was too much going on, and when you started to get used to the type of action going on, they'd switch it up, but the near constant intensity of it... You walk out of the theater feeling like you came out of the bad end of a boxing match.

As far as my prediction goes about Infinity War being in the middling tier of movies... It's hard to say after the one viewing, but it's certainly not going to be a movie I revisit frequently. We'll see how I feel about it after it's paired up with Avengers: 4 Infinity War Part 2 May 3, 2019...
