Right now, through the end of the month DriveThruRPG is offering GDW's Starter Traveller for free.
I've never played Traveller, or even read the rules. Not unless you count the T20 version of the game, anyway. I'm going to take some time this month, and read through the rules of the Starter version, and I'm going to post as I go.
Make sure you get all three separate files that make up that edition. The way they listed it there it might seem like there's just the one file, but that would not be the complete game.
ReplyDeleteIf you truly want your Classic Traveller game to feel complete, spend $2 for Traveller Supplement 4: Citizens of the Imperium. The second half of this book is pre-generated characters, which ubiquitous personal computer and the web have made even more worthless than they were when this supplement was published, but the first half contains 12 additional character career paths (many of them civilians) and rules for bow weapons that really round the game out.

@Anon~ Don't worry, I got all three!
ReplyDelete@John Morrow~ Additional career paths would definitely help expand things! And it's interesting that of all things the rules for bow weapons would round out the game. ;-)
The 12 additional careers are:
ReplyDeletePirates
Belters (asteroid miners)
Sailors (nautical navy)
Deplomats
Doctors
Flyers (aircraft pilots)
Barbarians
Bureaucrats
Rogues
Nobles
Scientists
Hunters
It adds some new skills:
Air Craft
Hunting
Prospecting
...and few new standard starships that can be gotten as benefits:
Safari Ship
Lab Ship
Corsair
Seeker (modified Scout for mining)
The bow weapons it adds are:
Sling
Short Bow
Long Bow
Sporting Crossbow
Military Crossbow
Repeating Crossbow
In my opinion, if you add this to the Starter Traveller set, you've got a complete game.
