Cardboard Starship #4: Transport part 2

Detailing a build can take what is essentially a cardboard box, and turn it into something else, something special. My strategy for this, for the interior was that the detailing needed to be such that it didn't interfere with game play. I used a couple of covid tests for the walls above the benches, and used some screen material for the hatches. The rest of the detailing is either cardstock or plasticard

In the above pic you can see the hatch to the cockpit along with the panels for accessing it. I haven't added the ladder up to the hatch yet, but it's coming. Below you can see the hatch for the engine compartment framed out with some additional panels and detailing. While working on this, I was doing my best to remember that this is a gaming piece of terrain, not a diorama, not a show piece... it's literally cardboard and trash, so I tried to keep from going overboard or over stressing about things not lining up perfectly.

What I think is more important to the look of the ship are the external panels. Once again, everything here is made of card stock and platicard (largely from old expired and used up gift cards). The basic goal is to make the card board not look like cardboard. I experimented with a variety of different shapes, some of which were more successful than others. Again, frequently reminding myself that it didn't need to be perfect, and that once painted many of the sins committed in its construction would be hidden, and largely I would be the only one to be able to see them.

One feature that needed to be clear on the ships were the cargo hatches. To ensure they were easily identifiable each is framed by those blue straws that came from the 100 water balloons in a minute sets you can get during the summer. Personally I hate water balloons, and balloons in general for the waste they create. This is my tiny bit of effort to reduce the waste. That and the reusable ones I got for my kid instead.

One thing I didn't consider when I was doing this is that because of the shape, on the table, the panels that slope down will be largely unseen. Unless you're looking at it from the side directly, this ends up being a lot of wasted effort... ah well. It was good practice.

You might notice the cockpit looks a lot different... I decided I hated the cardboard version, and repurposed the one I built for the cargo hauler. I still need to do a bit more work with the cockpit, but after that I think the outside of the ship is done.

The prow of the ship was the last bit I worked on, and by this point I felt like I had the process down. So much so that I actually took a bunch of WIP pics to show how I did it.

and finally the details!

Trash Bash Killa Kan

 Do I play 40K?

 Not anymore

Do I have space orc minis?

Nope

Is there a single reason I should be working on a Killa Kan for a game I don't play, to go with minis I don't have?

Yes, Gork and/or Mork inspired me.

And with that, I grabbed an old GW paint pot, and my boxes of trash crafting supplies, and got to work.

I sawed off the threads of the lid, and cut out a cardboard disk to close up the hole.
Then I used more cardboard, the clasp of a zip tie, and some tubing to make the face. Nothing was measured beyond holding it up and seeing if it looked good.

Next I had to decide how I wanted to make the legs. I started with a 2" base, and dug through my bits. For one foot I used the inside of a cheap toy car (the interior bit that makes up the windows) that I found on the ground at the playground parking lot, and for the other, a random bit of plastic that was used to secure a toy to a box. Add in some tubing, and you've got some legs!

At least the lower half of them. Then it was time for MOAR BITS! and attaching the body to the legs. This did involve some pinning, super glue and hot glue.

Arms! We need some arms for this bad boy... One side was going to be a shoota of some sort, the other a claw.
The claw was probably the most work of the whole build. I had to double up the thickness of the card I was using to make it, and figuring out how to make it look like it could actually move involved a lot of looking at reference pics of both miniatures and actual robotic arms.

As for the gun, it is mostly the corner protector piece from.... something. It was plastic and boxy, and had several holes in it. The shoota barrel is the tip of a marker. The only actual piece from a miniature is the red bit on top from a Reaper Miniature CAV mini.

What makes an orky vehicle really orky? Rivets! I ordered these flat bottom beads from amazon, and got to gluing...

Then it was Prime Time!

This was followed by craft smart "metallic brown" then the real painting began!  It's sloppy, and I sarted it with paint markers, but overall I'm pleased with how it came out.

I might go back and clean up a few details, but this is good enough to post, and more than good enough to put on the table, if I had any reason to.

Sci-Fi Terrain: Transfer Unit

Another of my trash bash terrain pieces, this one started back in April of last year, after making the Chemical Processors. The body of it was the cap for a set of sidewalk chalk. I added a pill bottle lid that I embellished with some thin plastic from a blister pack.

On the top were several other bottle caps and small lengths of thin straw, and I used the same hair elastic from my other build to make a pipe running from the top down the side. Since I didn't want the pipe down the side to be the only thing on it, I used 2 more lengths of the thin straw and a bit of sprue to add more detail.

On the back side I used another small length of the elastic, a bit of zip tie, and a couple of cut up pieces of leftover gun from the Reaper Black Star Corsairs that I converted a while back. (This is why I save all those bits of trash!)

The final side of the build I left blank, mostly cause I couldn't decide what to add to it.

One thing I quickly noticed was how unstable it was. The big bottle cap on the front was too heavy. That was an easy fix, I just glued in a wall fastener I had saved from some IKEA furniture.

Some time later, I primed it black, then in December I based it with the metal tone airbrush primer. As with the Chemical Processors, I painted it with the same green craft paint that seems to be the color bulk purchased by the owners/operators of the industrial zone I'm assembling.

Feeling that the blank side was missing something, I decided to paint a number on it, and as I'd been gifted some paint pens, I decided to try them out.

Gotta say, I think it looks good! And I've already started on my next one!

I think its an incinerator. But more on that later!

Sci-fi Terrain: Chemical Processors

The construction and painting of these 2 terrain pieces was amazingly simple, once I got around to actually doing it. I built them at the end of June in 2023, primed them sometime in the fall, and then didn't get around to painting them over a sessions until just a few weeks ago.

They're based around a set of support structures for a 3D printed piece of terrain, something designed to be tossed away, but the shape was too cool to trash. Digging in my recycling/bits box I grabbed a pair of lids from peanut butter jars to give them a more solid structure. There were holes at the top of each of them, and I used a pair of heroclix base inserts to make lids for them. I thought about leaving the bases flat so that figures could stand on them, but I didn't think it looked very good, so back to the bits box, and I snagged a pair of arms from some Reaper CAV minis (The Dictator B) along with a few other random bits, and used an old stretched out hair elastic to make the tube. Zip ties added some necessary texture to the sides, and I drilled holes and threaded some garden wire through for more visual interest.

And because I wanted these to look pretty gnarly, and also cause my super glue wasn't holding great, I slathered it with baking soda.

Then, like I said, it was a year before I painted them.

I don't have any WIP pics, but I can tell you the process. On the one in front, I painted it with a quick coat of Stynylrez airbrush Metal Tone primer, and them splotched on craftsmart Lush Foliage. The tubes/hair elastic was painted with Reaper Cairn Stone, and the red was Reaper Seoni Scarlet. The rust effect was painted with Reaper Numeria Rust.

The one in back I forgot to use the metal tone primer, and just painted the lush green straight onto the black primer, but was otherwise painted exactly the same. I did go back and dab on some of the metal tone here and there where the green didn't completely cover the primer. All in all I like the front one better, but both look good on the tabletop.

Space Gnolls

A while back, when Stargrave first came out, I decided to make some space gnolls. Nothing too crazy, just mercenary arms on gnoll bodies. And because I kinda hate the thin Frostgrave/Stargrave plastic bases, I put them on Reaper 1" bases. I then used the clipped off bits of integrated base to add some stone ruin bits onto the bases.

Then I glued on some gravel.

And spray primed them black.

I wasn't really sure what to do with them next, so I started with the fur, figuring that was easy, and then onto the clothing.

It took a number of tries to get the colors I wanted. I also decided, well into painting in progress to add a greenstuff wire running from the pouch to the hood on the hooded gnoll, and then to bulk up the stump the gnoll on the far left of the pic below into a full stone block.  The weapons were painted with a gunmetal color, and then highlighted with...  maybe Blade Steel?

Sadly I don't remember, and didn't write down the exact colors I used, but any future gnolls will be painted in different colors anyway.

Battlefleet Gothic Coming Into Orbit - Transports

I joined a couple of groups on Facebook that have resparked my interest in Battlefleet Gothic. The first was a Starship Modeler group, and that lead me to joining a BFG group. Mostly cause I didn't have the space to start building starships from Star Trek. Not at the scale I'd like. Not in this tiny apartment....

But BFG ships are all pretty small... And while I do have a sizable collection of Imperials, Chaos, Tau and Orcs... They're all in storage. And rather than try to dig them out, I just ordered some 3D prints.

After cleaning the supports off of them, I gave them a good wash, and then primed them black.

As you can see, there's a good assortment of Space Marine ships and a bunch of transports (middle to bottom right) along with a  pair of system ships (bottom left). Also in the mix are some Noble Armada ships (silver top left) that I had in the back of my mini box.

All primed!

Transports!

And here are the transports all painted up, along with a pair of system ships. It's hard to see but they're painted up like Coast Guard ships.

The goal with these was colorful. I think I nailed it.

Miniatures: Sci-Fi Dino Troopers

I have a bunch of miniature posts to catch up on, from the Raptors, to the Owlbear, to a bunch of vampires, and some ghouls

This post though, is about the sci-fi dino troopers from Reaper's Bones 4.

Of course I did most of the painting in October, and don't remember exactly what colors I used... I think I used grey liner, but it might have been blue...

You'll note that the bases are tiny. I've got these guys sitting on standard 1" bases, and, well, the only one that comes close is the T-Rex. So, sadly, I cut them all off their bases...

And stamped out some sci-fi bases. And yeah, that's one of the vampires I'll be posting about later.

Here they are!

Then I painted them up and glued them on. I probably could have done a cleaner job trimming the edges of the stamped mold. Also thinking that it might look better on square bases, but they're done, and they were fun to work on.

My biggest complaint, aside from the bases, is that there's only one of each of these guys. I'd love a few more variations for any or all of them. More weapons, different poses, but the same types of armor.

I have no idea what I'll ever use them for, but whatever.
