I worked a fairly well-paying after school job during high school, and a good chunk of that money went to D&D and various sci-fi/fantasy novels.
The one time my parents commented on me spending my money on role-playing games (note, they were concerned with my spending, not me playing the game. My parents were never "concerned" about D&D), my response was, "I live in the middle of nowhere Maine. I can spend money on buying books, or I can spend it on pot. Which would you prefer?".

The last I ever heard on the subject.
