I know I've written about it before, but my introduction to both miniature games and D&D came via Heroquest. It really was the best game ever made. Don't believe me? Check out Bardic Broadcasts' unboxing to find out why, and what the best part of the game was.

Blackstar & David Bowie
I can't claim that David Bowie has been a huge direct influence on my life. Yet, he's been a constant one. His music across the decades has been ever present, resonant, and interesting. His final work is probably was weird as anything he's ever done, and well worth a listen. He also manages to make the most interesting music videos, and he crams an entire campaign worth of ideas into each.
Seriously, so much inspirational stuff in there...
But no matter what, he'll always be the Goblin King to me...

Post Balticon: Short Films Review
As part of the Balticon experience, there is a short film festival on Sunday night. There were some really good films this year too. If I embedded it, it's absolutely worth watching! Below are links to the films and my ratings of each on a 1-5 scale:
The Reward - 5
Abiogenesis - 3 (link is to trailer only)
Pretty.
The Milk Run - 4
I really liked the end on this one.
The Saga of Biorn - 5
Watch this one now!
Netty Carlise and Iron Hands - 4
This one has an interesting D&D idea - a map in someone's hair!
Rollin Safari - 3.5
No real plot, but very cute.
C (299,792 km/second) - 3
Interesting premis, but desperately in need of some editing.
Luminaris - 4
Who'd have thought lightbulbs could be so interesting?
Ella - 3.5
I liked this, but it's completely missing a sci-fi/fantasy element, so I'm not sure why it was shown at Balticon.
Defining Fey - 4.5
This was fascinating, sadly this only links to the FB page for the movie.
The Titans of Newark - 5
The Greek gods meddle in the affairs of a Jersey accountant, featuring the minotaur and Calypso!
Culling - 3.5
The link only goes to a couple of pictures, not the video. In an irradiated, subterranean future world, a teenage boy finds himself having to re-evaluate his family values.
Behind - 4
Can't find a link, but this was a cute video of a little girl and her backpack
The Gate - 3
Great special effects, needed some editing
Catzilla - 3
Just what it sounds like.
Far- 4.5
I really liked this one, but this is only a link to the trailer. It's a live action short, about a very special date.
Dolls Factory - 3.5
I'd have rated this higher, but like several of the other shown, I think it needed a bit more editing.
Caldera - 2.5
Very pretty, but... I'm not really clear on what's going on.
Sleepworking - 2.5
Trailer only. Of all the movies shown this one was so very clearly student's work. It's got a very interesting premiss, but it needs some cleaning up.

Stonehell Delve 4: Going Too Deep
On the evening of 5/14 the following brave adventurers ventured into Stonehell, and went too deep...
Drak the Hood
Nick the Pike
- Kaldue (Swordsman)
Epthalia the Blade Dancer
- Killmor B’Tches (cleric hireling)
- Raja (Swordsman)
Magnus the Barbarian
- Snotface the kobold
Teneb, the City of Darkness, floated above the town of Dahar, casting its shadow on all below. The people of Dahar were wild with their mask covered merriment, but not everyone was celebrating. A troop of adventurers marched past the gatehouse, deep into the box canyon, and into the doorway of Stonehell in search of treasure.
Before they even made it down the stairs, voices were heard below. Drak scouted ahead and returned fairly quickly, reporting that they appeared to be fairly poor bandits/adventurers who were heading deeper into the dungeon. The group waited a short time, and then ventured into the dungeon’s entry hall.
Drak led the group back into the Quiet Halls, toward a staircase that went deeper into the dungeon. From the main door, the group turned into a side passage lined with crypts full of the undead. The adventurers fought their way through several ghouls, skeletons, zombies and a crypt spirit with relatively minor damage. At one point Nick went into one of the crypts to claim a coffer held by a skeleton. It, and 3 others all lept up and attacked, raking Nick’s back before being destroyed. The coffer held several hundred copper coins. In addition to the coins, a rune covered ax and a potion vial
Past the crypts was a small room with stairs leading down. Exiting the stair room lead to an octagonal room with a smashed pillar with a stone snake wrapped around it. Moving further into the new area the party discovered a side passage flanked by a pair of rooms filled with massive machines of unknown function. At the end of the hall was a room with a large switch on the floor. Drak entered the room alone, and threw the switch to the middle position. The machinery in the side rooms all began to grind into action. The room began to shake, and then dropped fairly quickly, sealing off the end of the hall with a solid stone plug, taking Drak out of sight. It took a few minutes for the machines to come to a stop.
While waiting to see if the room would return, 4 ugly stone colored toads bounced around the corner. The machinery in the rooms began to spin again just as they appeared. Nick lobbed an oil vial at them, setting them on fire, while Epthalia charged them. As the door reappeared 2 demonic stone colored winged creatures rushed out toward the adventurers. Drak was nowhere to be seen...
The creatures slammed into the adventurers hard. Kaldue was the first to fall, followed quickly by Magnus. Everyone else ran. Kilmor fell last. Nick, Epthalia, Raja, and Snotface escaped back up to the hall of crypts. They hid themselves in one of the emptied crypts and spent some time deciding what to do. They were roused back into action with the arrival of several large centipedes that sent the adventurers scurrying back into the hall. Nick then led them back down the stairs to find out what happened to their friends. The demon beasts were gone, but they left behind the ravaged bodies of their friends. Kilmor was alive, but unconscious, and his face had been mostly removed from the nose down. Kaldue and Magnus were both bleeding out with no chance of getting them to healing before their died. Epthalia administered last rites to them. The elevator room had again gone down, and of Drak there was no sign.
Picking up their fallen comrades, the adventurers scurried from the depths of Stonehell with heavy hearts and empty purses.
As always, a big thanks to Nicholas Mizer for running a great game!

When the nights grow long...
The adventurers rode slowly toward the snow covered town, the sound of drums and horns could be heard well before they reached the gate. The town had the air of a festival, with musicians, food vendors, and seemingly the entire populace lining the main street through the town, looking in the direction of the far gate. The last rays of the sun leaving pastel streaks across the clouds.
“This feels odd” Allianora said, leaning toward her companions.
“What do you mean?” Rathgar asked. “It’s a solstice festival.”
“No, Allianora’s right” Nimble said. “Look around... look at the people.”
“No one is smiling.” Feris noted.
“Right” Nimble nodded “Whatever’s going on, these people aren’t happy about it.”
As twilight faded into darkness, the drumming swelled. A knee deep ground fog began to roil into the town from the far gate, and the crowd’s nervous energy seemed to spike. Flickering torches appeared beyond the gate as demonic beings lurched their way into the town. Each being was different, yet all were covered in wild fur, with bestial mouths and tongues that perpetually hung out of their mouths. All had horns, some straight, some curved, some with multiple sets. They carried whips, staffs, torches, chains, and leather sacks.
The children of the town were pushed to the front of the crowd, and the demons began to sniff, touch, lick, and taunt them. The adventurers watched as a boy was pulled into the middle of the street, and thrown to the ground. He was kicked by several of the beasts as they walked by, and whipped by another before he scrambled back toward the crowd. A little further long a little girl was dragged by her hair screaming away from the crowd. Two of the beasts shoved her into one of the leather sacks, cinching it tight before giving it a few jabs.
Allianora stared horrified at the spectacle, seemingly frozen as the demons approached the adventurers. Rathgar fingered the hilt of his sword, and Feris subtly drew a wand and hid it beneath his cloak. Feris’ horse stood alone, tied to a post, but no one noticed.
Snapping out of her horror, Allianora slipped from her horse, pushed through the crowd, and stood before the creatures. The entire town paused. The crowd seemed to hold it’s breath, and fear bordered on terror. The demons waited, and looked at her, their tongues lolling.
"Let that child go."
"Why?" the demon hissed.
"I'll give you this" in her outstretched hand was an orange.
I hope you've all been nice this year...
